Being Body Positive: Is there room for a fit person to be a part of the conversation and talk about fat loss?
This is going to get juicy.
[An opinion piece]
When I first began spreading the #irockthesportsbra movement, I identified myself as being a part of the body positive community until one day…. I was not. Because I didn’t look like “her” - curvy or round.
#irockthesportsbra is about celebrating the body as is, letting go of judgments and fear around wearing a sportsbra in public, and feeling & performing as a “badass”, strong, confident, powerful female athlete.
For years I felt shame and never fit in within the fitness industry....
Diets for weight loss suck. They suck a lot.. But we do them anyway, right?
We eat “bad”, we gain a little, we feel guilty, we diet, we fall off track, we eat again, we gain more, we get upset, we diet harder this time, we cleanse, we binge more, we regret more, we eat more… It’s a tough cycle to end.
We just want that before & after right? And we want that “after” to finally stick!
So let’s chat about it. Here are the bad, the ugly, & the horrendous...
I'd love to go back to my 20 year old self and tell her a thing or 2 or... 4 before beginning her fitness journey.
I’m just going to get right to it! Here they are:
- Toning muscles is not a real thing! Strengthening muscles is a real thing. But, there is no such thing as toning. There is fat loss. There is weight loss. There is fat gain. There is weight gain. There is muscle mass increase and muscle mass decrease. There is fit and there is not fit....
Is HIIT Good for Women? Why you should HIIT even if you think you are out of shape, too old, or can't jump!
Should you HIIT? The answer is a resounding “HELL YES!” But you already knew I would say that.
What is HIIT anyway?
HIIT is High Intensity Interval Training. RIP Then ROCK’s “UNLEASH” Workout Series is classified under HIIT. (Tabata, which is HIIT, to be exact.)
The premise is simple; it is workout programming that involves periods of short intense exercise followed by low intensity movements or recovery.
Intense exercise is, however, relatively perceived. Each person will experience an individual threshold of “intensity” depending on physical limitations. What feels intense...
If you’re into fitness resolutions, go you! But I’m one of the 99.99999999% of people who set them….and… give up on them & forget them… that’s the end of that story.
Year after year, it’s the same. I promise myself that this will be THE year I successfully:
• lose weight
• eat clean
• quit sugar & fast food
• take care of myself more
to find myself reverting back to the old ways I’ve been beating myself up over year after year after year.
